Algoma District - Sault Ste Marie

 

Tourists from all over North America and Europe flock to Algoma District to ride the Algoma Central Railway's world-famous tour train. With hundreds of miles of hiking, ski and snowmobile trails, Algoma District is also a magnet for wilderness adventurers.

 

The Algoma District borders the District of Thunder Bay and the State of Michigan, USA to the west, and the Districts Sudbury to the east and Cochrane to the north. Algoma District has extensive water front on Lakes Superior and Huron along its western and southern boundaries.

 

Algoma2.jpgThe largest community in the district, the City of Sault Ste Marie (Population 81,000) is located on a strategic waterway linking Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Sault Ste. Marie has long been a vital hub of transportation and commerce - the biggest potential for the city's future lies in its growing tourism sector. Sault Ste Marie is situated 560 Kilometers (350 miles) north of Detroit and 684 Kilometers (480 miles) from Toronto.

 

Communities located within the district include Spanish, Elliot Lake, Blind River, Thessalon, St. Joseph Island, Sault Ste Marie, Searchmont, Batchewana Bay, Wawa, White River, Hornepayne,  Michipicoten River, Montreal River, Ranger Lake, Heydon, Goulais River, Garden River, Poplar Dale, Leeburn, Echo Bay, Rock Lake, Desbarats, Rydal Bank, Wharncliffe, Sowerby, Iron Bridge, Spragge, Cutler, Walford, Pronto East, Dunnis Valley, Ophir, Bruce Mines, Richard's Landing, Kentvale, Hilton Beach.
