Cochrane District, located in an area known as the "James Bay Frontier", borders James Bay and Kenora District to the north, Timiskaming and Sudbury Districts to the south and the Districts of Thunder Bay and Algoma to the west, with the province of Quebec bordering to the east of the district.
Communities located within the district include Timmins, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane, Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing, Hearst and Moosonee at the mouth of the Moose River on James Bay.
The town of Cochrane is the starting point for the famous Polar Bear Express that travels the rails north to the native villages of Northern Ontario and the southern shores of James Bay at Moosonee
Encompassing an area of 390,000 square kilometres, the "James Bay Frontier" is the largest travel area in Ontario and is well known for it's rugged wilderness and all the fantastic outdoor adventures that go along with it but is also home to great leisure activities.
The largest community in the district, The City of Timmins (Population 45,000) is situated in the most southern part of the district, and is located 440 kilometers (273 miles) northeast of Sault Ste. Marie, 680 kilometers (422 miles) north of Toronto and 730 kilometers (454 miles) to the northwest of Ottawa.
